What You need to know checklist - Light
- Be able to say that light is a form of energy and give examples to prove this
• Describe the difference between luminous and non luminous objects
• Say that light travels in straight lines and describe an experiment to show this
• Explain why shadows are formed
• Say what reflection is and describe an experiment to show the line of incidence and the line of reflection
• Describe using diagrams how a periscope works
• Describe that refraction is the bending of light when it passes through a substance with a different density such as passing from air to water or air to glass
• Be able to draw diagrams to show how light bends in blocks of glass
• Explain that a convex lens collects light rays to a point and draw a diagram to show this they are used in spectacles for long sighted people
• Explain that a concave lens spreads rays out and draw a diagram to show this they are used in spectacles for short sighted people - Be able to name the 7 colours in the spectrum of light (ie the rainbow)
- What is the splitting of light into it's 7 colours called?
- what kinds of things can split light into it's colours (ie what did we use in the lab to split light into it's colours?, How are rainbows formed? )
