Checklist - What you need to know Atoms, Elements and Compounds
• Know that an atom is the tiniest particle of an element that still has the properties of that element
• Know that an element is made of only one type of atom and cannot be broken down by chemical means
• Be able to name and describe some common elements (page 127 learn 2)
• Look over the periodic table to see the symbols for some elements
• Know that a compound is formed when 2 or more elements combine together chemically
• Know that a molecule is the smallest part of a compound
• Remember how we made the compound Iron Sulphide by heating iron with sulphur and that a compound is a completely new substance with its own properties
Be able to identify a compound, an element or a mixture from diagrams Eg.
